“We get atherosclerosis by eating too much cholesterol and saturated fat. It is our fault, not our parents’ fault. Atherosclerosis is very rare in populations with LDL cholesterol levels <70 mg/dL for a lifetime.”

“Do we want to continue doing 1.5 million coronary angioplasty-stent cases a year and 0.3 million coronary bypass operations a year? Or do we want to grab the wheel of health and lower our cholesterol and blood pressure and body weight numbers?”

“Fast foods mean quick plaques.”

“We kill the cows and then they kill us! That is the way the system works.”

“Those with total cholesterol levels of approximately 300 mg/dL live into their 30s and 40s.”

What risk factors predispose to atherosclerosis?

“Risk factors include hypercholesterolemia, systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, low HDL cholesterol, cigarette smoking, and inactivity.”

According to Roberts, “Those who are utterly immune to heart disease without the use of statin drugs are pure fruit eaters.” [That is his way of saying vegetarian.]

Dr. Roberts for 30 years headed pathology section of heart, lung, and Blood Institute, division of NIH. He wrote 1400 articles and wrote or edited 24 books. He served as editor in chief of The American Journal of Cardiology since 1982. He is executive director of Baylor Cardiovascular Institute in Texas.
